Camden Downtown Institutional Plan
Camden is undergoing an extraordinary revitalization. Spearheaded by CooperUniversityHospital, the Cooper Ferry Development Corporation, Campbell Soup, Rutgers and RowanUniversities. A Nelessen Associates was commissioned to prepare a vision plan for the Downtown Institutional Core which focused on the utilization of the many open and underutilized parcels surrounding the transit station. A Design Charette with the major stakeholders, set forth the policies, available parcels and preliminary program for new buildings, changes in street pattern, transit and parking improvements.
From this charette, A Nelessen Associates generate a range of preliminary infill building concepts for each vacant parcel, the street and secondary transit network parking and openspaces. The result of interaction with the revitalization partners, generated a comprehensive urban design, transit and landscape plan that connected the Universities to the transit center then onto CooperHospital campus and the surrounding neighborhoods. The plan called for the expansion the transit center with a new central shared walkable space public plaza that connected the transit center across MLK to the new Rowan Cooper Medical Campus. ANA also had the opportunity to prepare a concept plan for the Campbell Soup campus expansion using an open block concept with the design of the first proposed vertical garden in New Jersey. ANA prepared concept renderings for street improvements, the new shared plaza, the mixed-use nursing school, the new business school, and the joint use building.
